Media Release

A statement purportedly issued by the Government Information Services of the Government of Grenada has come to the attention of One Caribbean Media (OCM), the majority shareholder in Grenada Broadcasting Network Limited (GBN). One Caribbean Media is satisfied that the views expressed in the statement do not reflect the policy of the Government of Grenada, either as the other shareholder of GBN or as the regulator of the broadcasting industry.

We acknowledge that during heavy rains recently, water entered into the studio control area through a leaking roof. Since that event, we have ascertained that there was no damage to the equipment or the facilities, nor was there any danger posed to health and safety by the rain event. The leaking roof was immediately addressed.

It is a fact that the refurbishing of the building at Observatory has taken inordinately long since it was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan. One Caribbean Media is acutely conscious of the delays that have affected this project which have been due to several factors including (1) design delays, and (2) ensuring that the new structure is affordable by GBN at a time when the media industry globally and in the region is facing very challenging times. We have throughout this process kept the Government of Grenada informed through the government-appointed directors on the board of GBN and through direct communication with the Office of the Prime Minister. We have accomplished a great deal since critical revised design decisions were taken some months ago, and we expect that the contractor will take possession of the site in August 2010 with completion scheduled in 2011.

The statement adverts to several matters relating to industrial relations between GBN and the union representing the workers, including matters regarding individual workers or former workers. It is not the practice of OCM or its subsidiaries to conduct its negotiations on such matters in the public domain. Suffice it to say, that all the workers of GBN were relocated to adequate accommodation in two separate locations since 2008 and that the plant at Observatory where the rain event occurred was being used only for the production of the nightly newscast and ancillary services , and is not otherwise occupied by staff.

We wish to assure the Government and people of Grenada that One Caribbean Media is committed to the refurbishment of the building at Observatory, to creating a viable Grenada Broadcasting Network which maintains the highest standards of professional and editorial integrity and which leverages the relationship with other units in the OCM Group to provide quality programming for the people of Grenada. We apologise for the delay with the refurbishing of the building and hope that we will continue to receive the forbearance of the staff and the public while this and other changes take place to improve both staff accommodation as well as the range and quality of programming.
